Some suggestion:

Use simple words, short sentence.
Speak slowly.
Try to find another way (some other words) to repeat your meaning if he can not understood your first speaking.
Please avoid anxious, most westen people are very kind.
You can give up a complex explanation. Nobody will blame you.
Let LaoWai drink a coffee or water, if you tired.
He can not speak Chinese, it is his fault.
